For over 25 years, the Black Theatre Network has collected, processed and distributed information that supports the professional and personal development of its membership (comprised of representatives from all areas of theatre, community and professional organizations, and academic institutions).

BTN is a non-profit organization run by volunteers. It has a four-point action program:

PROVIDE Black Theatre artists··and scholars with a milieu to exchange ideas
PREPARE our youth to make "sound" graduate school and professional career decisions
ENCOURAGE the production of plays about the Black experience

A "day of solidarity" - June 18

This past year, Project1Voice launched a "day of solidarity" in celebration of Black Theatre with readings of Alice Childress's play TROUBLE IN MIND all across the country. With more than 5,000 people in attendance from New York to California, the event was a resounding success. Theatre luminaries such as Leslie Uggams, LaTanya Richardson-Jackson, Andre De Shields, Peter Coyote, Bill Irwin and LaChanze lent their time and talent to Project1Voice's inaugural event.

This coming June 18th, 2012, Project1Voice will sponsor James Baldwin's THE AMEN CORNER for its nationally staged reading. Learn more

Usher joins cast of off-Broadway play for 1 day

NEW YORK (AP) — Usher is heading off-Broadway.

The Grammy winner will join the cast of "Fuerza Bruta: Look Up," the fast-paced, acrobatic and unconventional play where the audience stands as performers dance and jump around. A news release says the performers "frolic in a watery world suspended just above the audience."

Usher will perform at two shows as its lead "Running Man" on April 28 at the Daryl Roth Theatre.

"Fuerza Bruta" means "brute force" in Spanish. The play was developed by Diqui James, the Argentine creator of the long-running "De La Guarda

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Thousand reggae fans crowded a Kingston park late Thursday to watch a screening of a documentary about Bob Marley, the charismatic icon of reggae music who brought the Jamaican musical genre to every corner of the globe.

"Marley," which will be released worldwide on Friday, premiered in his Caribbean homeland to high praise from Jamaicans who marveled at footage showing the late singer's impassioned interviews, family life and loose-limbed stage presence.

Chicago jury chosen in Hudson family murder trial

CHICAGO (AP) — Jury selection wrapped up Tuesday for the Chicago trial of the man accused of killing the mother, brother and 7-year-old nephew of actress and singer Jennifer Hudson.

The final four panelists were chosen on the second day of one-by-one questioning of prospective jurors. Among them was a member of an acrobatics group and someone who served years ago on the jury of another murder trial.
